UsedVanIsle is built for people on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands to meet in person and exchange items safely, simply, and respectfully. The platform is designed to protect privacy and encourage reliability with arranged meetings.
This site is Canadian owned, built in Canada, and on Canadian infrastructure (sorry, not sorry, USA). It also relies occasionally, in part, on Pacific salmon, Saskatoon Berry Pies, Nanaimo Bars, and Winnipeg Rye Bread.
How Does it Work?
When you find a listing you’re interested in, message the seller.
The internal messaging system is designed to protect your privacy, and dovetails into arranging a meetup. You'll be notified by email whenever you receive an internal message.
When You’re Ready to Meetup
Through the internal messaging system, when both parties agree on a scheduled place for a meetup, the Seller sends an invite with that specific date and time to the Buyer.
At that point:
- The listing is temporarily marked Pending.
- The buyer has up to four hours to accept or decline the meetup invite.
- If there’s no response, the invitation automatically expires and the item becomes Available again.
Follow-Through Matters
Once a meetup is accepted by the buyer, it’s considered a commitment that both should honour and show up on time.
If plans change, either person can cancel via the messaging system, and the sooner the better. Clear communication and being reliable is part of being considerate to one another.
If a buyer or seller "ghosts" (ie. doesn't show up, doesn't communicate), the other party has an option to record the other party as a No-Show, so please be courteous.
After the meetup:
- If your listing is marked as Sold, it will remain visible for 48 hours after which it is unpublished.
- If the listing didn’t sell, and is marked as such, it becomes Available again
What “Pending” and “Sold” Mean
Available
The item is open for expressing interest and asking questions.
Pending
The Seller has arranged a meetup with a Buyer. Only Buyers who messaged the Seller before the item was Pending can continue messaging them until the Pending status changes. No new interested parties can override the arrangement.
Sold
The item is marked as sold. The conversation between the Seller and Buyer remains open for 48 hours in case of any issues with the purchased item, then closes automatically. Sold listings stay visible for 48 hours before being automatically unpublished.
UsedVanIsle does not:
- Handle payments
- Mediate disputes
- Act as a middleman
- Publicly score users
Transactions happen directly between neighbours.
